Nigeria – The Chairman Federal Character Commission, FCC, Hon. Kayode Oladele has called for the support and cooperation of media as a key partner in promoting the core values of the Federal Character Principle, which is fairness, balance, and national integration.
Hon. Oladele made the call during an interactive meeting with the media held on July 24, 2025 at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.
According to him, “In a country as diverse and complex as Nigeria, information is power, and communication is a bridge. The media plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions, informing public opinion, and holding institutions accountable. But beyond that, the media is a key partner in promoting the core values of the Federal Character Principle: fairness, balance, and national integration”.
His words: “The work of the Commission can only be truly impactful if it is understood and embraced by the public. And to achieve this, we need the media as a partner in progress. We must move from mere information dissemination to collaborative engagement, where the press becomes a co-guardian of the principles we uphold.
I therefore call on members of the press to:
1. Report objectively and factually on the activities of the Commission — especially on sensitive matters relating to appointments, recruitment, and equity in national affairs.
2. Support public enlightenment campaigns that promote understanding of the Federal Character Principle among grassroots communities, civil society, and youth groups.
3. Help counter misinformation and regional mistrust, which often arise from misconceptions about federal appointments, perceived marginalization, or infrastructure allocation.
4. Serve as a feedback channel between the Commission and the people — bringing to our attention issues of concern, perceived violations, or suggestions for improvement.
Working Together for National Unity and in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President.
Let me be clear: The media is not just a stakeholder; it is a strategic partner. When the media supports the right narrative , one rooted in truth, unity, and fairness, we all win. Nigeria wins. Our children win. And the future becomes more hopeful.
That is why the Commission is committed to maintaining an open-door policy for the media, organizing regular press briefings, sharing accurate data, and building a transparent relationship based on trust and shared national interest.
In conclusion, let me remind us all that nation-building is not the work of government alone. It is the collective responsibility of every citizen, every institution, and indeed, every journalist and media house.
“The Federal Character Commission stands ready to work hand in hand with the media to promote equity, justice, and national cohesion. Together, we can reshape the narrative, strengthen the federation, and ensure that every Nigerian regardless of origin finds a place of pride in the national story”.
