Nigeria – The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to elevate the Biomedical Engineering department of Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE) to produce medical equipment that meets international standards.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, who announced the FG plan on Wednesday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Library and ICT block at the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE), noted that President Bola Tinubu has made the health of Nigerians a top priority, with a vision to build a robust healthcare workforce capable of serving both local and international needs.
According to him, investing in the production of healthcare professionals is critical to the country’s future.
Dr. Salako, while pledging federal government support for all ongoing projects at the university and announced plans to elevate the Biomedical Engineering department to produce medical equipment that meets international standards.
He said, “We will push it higher to a level that can get international patronage to boost revenue generation”.
Expressing confidence in the university’s direction, the Minister commended the Vice Chancellor for his dedication and leadership, assuring continued support from the ministry.
The Minister, who also inspected hospital equipment produced by the university’s Biomedical Engineering students, expressed satisfaction with the quality of their work, describing the devices as useful and reliable, even from his experience in private medical practice.
“This university occupies a very critical position in realising the president’s vision and has a responsibility to help the Federal Government achieve this laudable goal”, he stated.
Dr. Salako, who was honoured with an Honorary Distinguished Fellowship by the University Senate in recognition of his contributions, urged lecturers at the institution to take the training of health professionals seriously, emphasising the government’s commitment to supporting FUAHSE in transforming its medical centre, particularly with the adoption of electronic medical records.
