Kano Stakeholders Underscored Significance Of Fortified Brown Rice

 

 

 

In a concerted effort to combat Nigeria’s persistent malnutrition challenge, stakeholders in Kano State have emphasized the critical role of fortified brown rice in addressing the scourge.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alhaji Kubra Imam, made the submission during a multi-stakeholders roundtable meeting organized in partnership with Technoserve Nigeria at the Bristol Palace Hotel, Kano for the West African Fortified Parboiled Unpolished Rice (WAFPUR).

Kubra reiterated that fortified brown rice would improve nutrition by providing essential micronutrients, reducing the risk of malnutrition and related health issues, increasing food security by addressing hunger and food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable communities, and also boosting economic growth and development by supporting local rice producers.

In her remarks, the Country Director of Technoserve Nigeria, Mrs. Adesuwa Akinboro, appreciated the Kano State Government and key partners for their collaboration in advancing the initiative, reaffirming Technoserve’s commitment to leveraging business solutions in fighting poverty and malnutrition.

Akinboro also highlighted the WAFPUR project’s vital role in fortifying parboiled unpolished rice, contributing to improved nutrition and providing economic opportunities for local rice producers.

The Director at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Nasiru Surajo, also gave an insight into the operational system of the National Homegrown School Feeding Program (NHGSFP) in Kano, highlighting the significance of fortified rice in enhancing the nutritional quality of school meals.

The WAFPUR Project Manager, Ava Bawa who provided an in-depth overview of the initiative, highlighted the progress made so far and the project’s critical role in addressing malnutrition through fortified brown rice.

She also facilitated an interactive session that explored the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating brown rice into school feeding programs, focusing on overcoming barriers and expanding access to nutritious meals for children.
