Nigeria. – The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, MFR, on behalf of the Yewa Traditional Council, the Council of Yewa Titled Chiefs, and the people of Yewaland, on Saturday 1st March, 2025 announced the transition of the Iyalode of Yewaland and former Minister of National Planning, Her Excellency, Chief (Mrs.) Ebun Akinola Oyagbola.
Chief (Mrs.) Oyagbola, who has the record of being the first female minister of cabinet rank in Nigeria under the Shagari Administration and former Ambassador to the United States of Mexico comprising Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala, died on Friday at the age of 93.
Oba Olugbenle, in a statement issued from his palace in Ilaro, described Chief Oyagbola’s passing as a “monumental loss to Yewaland and Nigeria at large.”
He extolled her contributions to national development, diplomacy, and community leadership, emphasizing that her dedication to public service and her pioneering spirit will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
“As the first Iyalode of Yewaland, she was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and leadership in our land. Her legacy as a trailblazer in politics, governance, and community service will forever be cherished. On behalf of the Yewa Traditional Council and the entire people of Yewaland, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family. We pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this great loss,” the Paramount Ruler stated.
Kabiyesi said, “Chief Oyagbola’s impact extended beyond politics and diplomacy; she was a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and played a crucial role in the development of Yewaland.
“Her investiture as the first Iyalode of Yewaland in 2021 was a testament to her commitment to her people”.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and many mentees whose lives she touched with her wisdom and guidance.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
